Fraud and Identity Theft prevention and resources

Cat Racoon

As we move into the new year this month, the Prescott Valley Police Department would like to remind people to keep a close watch on their personal identifying information.

Some example of personal identifying information include Name, Address, Phone number, Email, Social Security Number, Date of Birth, or Mother’s Maiden Name.   All these things separate or together can be used to apply for loans, Credit Cards, Unemployment/Social Security benefits or open financial accounts.

The first line of defense in safeguarding your information is in restricting who has access to that information and shredding or burning all extra paperwork with that type of information.

The second line of defense is doing a credit check for yourself to ensure no one has used your information to open an account or apply for a loan.   This is free through Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Should you fall victim to identity theft, make sure you contact your financial institutions and the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov or calling 877-382-4357.
