Becoming One by Jac Conant

Becoming One

This work is on permanent loan. The stump of desert ironwood was discovered by the artist and his 9 year old son in 1983. It took them 3 days to excavate the stump and it weighed 300lbs. Ironwood is in the legume family, and nodules form on the roots. The top of the sculpture is actually the bottom roots and nodules. Over time it has developed a desert glaze, and the natural oils protect it and enhances its beauty. This sculpture was a great adventure, mystery and challenge. At every corner it revealed a new shape. The inspiration of the piece is the mystery locked up in this ancient stump. As soon as I started excavating this treasure, I could tell that there were fantastic shapes that needed to be revealed for everyone to enjoy.
